About the Freeport Art Museum MISSION: to promote an understanding of art and culture through our collections, exhibition, and education. VISION: It is the vision of the Freeport Art Museum to contribute to the vibrancy and revitalization of our community by becoming the region’s foremost source of understanding the history, nature and significance of the world’s artistic heritage. HISTORY: Established in 1975, the Freeport Art Museum (FAM) shares the visual and performing arts with the people of Northwest Illinois. The Museum exhibits art from its large collection as well as regional contemporary artists, and brings traveling exhibitions to the community. The FAM supports performing arts and develops art education programming for all ages. Another important activity is the funding of cultural activities in northwest Illinois as a re-granting agency of the Illinois Arts Council. Local funding was raised to convert a historic elementary school building into the current Freeport Art Museum. The building is leased from the City; however all of the operating expenses are raised by membership, donations, and grants from the Illinois Arts Council. Currently the FAM's collection contains nearly 4,000 artifacts from all continents and all time periods including antiquities; ethnographic objects from Southeast Asia, and Papua New Guinea; Pre-Columbian and Native American artifacts; excellent 15th to 19th century European paintings, prints and sculpture; a significant collection of textiles from around the world; and a large collection of contemporary American prints, paintings, and sculpture.
