Special Events ART IN THE PARK
Art in the Park is a one-day outdoor arts festival celebrating the visual and performing arts of Illinois in beautiful Krape Park. On Sunday, August 31, 2008 from 10 AM to 5 PM, this FREE community event offers something for the whole family. Artists from across northern Illinois will display their work, from paintings and photography to wood working and ceramics. Musicians and performing artists will also be featured. Children and families can create their own art work at a hands-on activity area or watch as professional artists demonstrate their skills. As part of the official anniversary celebrations for the Lincoln-Douglas Sesquicentennial, Art in the Park is a joint inititative of the Freeport Park District, Freeport Arts Center and the Momentum Art Guild. “The Arts Center is proud to be part of this collaboration and create opportunities for the community to connect with artists, “says Jennifer Kirker, Director of the Freeport Arts Center. “The Sesquicentennial weekend is going to bring thousands of people from all over the country and we could not think of a better way to promote our community than by featuring the arts and parks of Freeport.” Awards will be presented to artists by Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Visitors have the opportunity to vote for Best in Show, and make sure their favorite is selected! Not only will visitors be able to see exquisite artwork from a variety of talented artists, they will also be able to purchase artwork for their personal collection. The outdoor location at Krape Park will set the stage for Art in the Park. Superintendent of Recreation for the Freeport Park District, Ron Schneider, says “The Freeport Park District is very pleased to host Art in the Park at Krape Park and we hope this event becomes an annual tradition in Freeport. There is a direct correlation between recreation and art, so this festival is an exciting new recreation opportunity for the District.” In addition to the activities planned for art in the Park, visitors can also explore the amenities of Krape Park; an antique working carousel, Yellow Creek and paddleboat rentals, fenced in duck farm, fishing areas, waterfall, children’s play areas, miniature golf and much more. Food will be available from several local vendors. This event is sponsored by the Illinois Arts Council, Freeport Midwest Dental, Riteway Furniture, Skate Station, State Bank, Union Savings Bank, Kiwanis Club of Freeport, Lincoln-Douglas Kiwanis Club, Freeport Sunrise Rotary and the VFW Post 998. The Art in the Park planning committee is still accepting visual and performing artist applications. If you are an artist that is interested in taking part in Art in the Park, please call the Freeport Park District at 815-235-6114 or the Freeport Arts Center at 815-235-9755.
